1. General Questions

1.1.What is a browser add-on?
A browser add-on is an application that extends the functionality of your existing web browser. The BrowserNation add-on can be designed and customized to suit any publisher. The publisher shares the add-on with members of its community in order to offer them a more compelling browsing experience. Members of the community use an add-on because it keeps them connected to something for which they have a passion or because they are rewarded for using it.
1.2.What makes the BrowserNation add-on so special?
The BrowserNation add-on retains all the functions of a regular browser – and then adds a whole lot more besides. It offers exciting designs and acts as a great content delivery platform. Additional features include an RSS reader, an embedded YouTube player and links to the most popular social networks. The result is that it keeps you connected to the organization of your choosing – all the time you’re online.

2. Downloading the application

2.1.What am I actually downloading when I download a BrowserNation add-on?
You are downloading an XPInstall (Cross-Platform Install) file. This is technology used by Firefox for installing Mozilla extensions that add functionality to the main browser application.
2.2.How big is the download file?
Normally between 0.5MB and 2.5MB. The size depends on the number of background images used by the publisher.
2.3.Why am I being asked for my name and email address after installing the add-on?
Not all of BrowserNation’s customers (the publishers for whom the app is branded) ask you for your name and email address when installing their add-on. Those who do, do so because they want to incentivize you to become – and reward you for being – loyal members of their online community. The more you use their add-on, the more points you will get as part of this loyalty program. At the end of a period of time the publisher will give prizes and rewards to their most loyal customers. The only way they can let you know you’ve won – and be able to give you your prize – is if they have your name and email address. The specific nature of these loyalty programs depends entirely on the publisher in question, and the publisher will communicate that information to you directly, probably at the same time as asking you for your name and email address.
2.4.Where can I find a copy of BrowserNation’s End-User Licensing Agreement?
This document is available when you download the add-on. If you’d like to review it please click here.

5. Security, privacy and more

5.1.How secure is a BrowserNation add-on?
Our application is an add-on to your existing Mozilla Firefox browser. It is therefore equally as secure as a ‘regular’ Firefox browser. Firefox uses its open-source security process that addresses threats, which, in turn, keeps you safe online. Learn more about how safe it is to browse the web using a Firefox browser.
5.2.When Mozilla releases updates for Firefox, how will my BrowserNation add-on react?
Firefox updates will not affect the way your add-on functions. In cases when an update of the BrowserNation application is required, your add-on will be automatically updated to ensure it’s in keeping with Firefox’s latest release.
5.3.Will the BN add-on affect my favorites/bookmarks?
No, you will keep all of your old Firefox favorites/bookmarks.
5.4.What about my passwords if I already use Firefox?
Downloading the add-on will have no affect on your passwords.
5.5.What about my passwords and favorites if I used to use IE, Chrome or another type of browser?
The BrowserNation add-on is only compatible with Firefox. As a result, when you download the BrowserNation add-on when using IE, Chrome or another type of browser, you will automatically be encouraged to download Firefox. During this download process Firefox will prompt you to import your passwords and other settings from your previous browser.

6. Characteristics of the BrowserNation application

6.1.Will the BN application make my browser slower?
Normally no, but if the publisher has chosen to use a large number of images in the design of its add-on, the actual time it takes to launch the browser may increase very slightly, but that is usually a one-time per day event. The speed of the Internet will not change. See for yourself by downloading one…
6.2.I think the margin on the right-hand side of the BrowserNation application takes up too much space. Can I change this?
Yes. There is a button on the bottom right side of the right-hand margin that allows you to minimize it. Even if you choose to minimize the right-hand margin, the Vertical Content Tabs on the right-hand of the screen will still be visible to you and so you will still be connected to the publisher’s latest content. Click here for more instructions about how to customize your add-on.
6.3.Do you have a sample add-on I can look at?
We do have a Demo Add-on, which is accessible from the Publishers’ homepage, but it is just as easy to take a look at one of our live apps on the page called Choose Your Browser. Here you will be able to see our clients, view a screenshot of each browser, and download whichever app you wish to use.
6.4.What are the specific features of the BrowserNation application?
A breakdown of the features of the product can be found here.
(There are three pages with diagrams of information available via that link!)

7. Toolbars, plug-ins and browser compatibility

7.1.What happens if I try to install a toolbar on top of an add-on?
You can download toolbars on top of the add-on. But if you do so, you are somewhat defeating the object of using a branded add-on. Essentially, all you will be doing is adding more customization on top of an already customized product, which will certainly create a clash of design and might interfere with some of the functionality of both applications. You’re welcome to try it – no harm will come of it – but your browsing experience might be affected and the outcome may look strange.
7.2.Do I have to reinstall plug-ins and other add-on software after installing a BrowserNation add-on?
No, you will not need to reinstall your existing plug-ins. To make sure you have the latest version of your Firefox plug-ins such as Java, Flash, or Quicktime (to name a few), you may wish to run a Plugin Check.
7.3.With which browsers is the BrowserNation add-on compatible?
At the moment our add-on is exclusively compatible with Mozilla Firefox versions 3.5 and higher. Mozilla (the organization that develops the Firefox browser) offers its product with open source coding. This means that 3rd party developers like BrowerNation can use the Firefox core and add exciting themes and additional functions. Other web browser developers (like Microsoft IE and Google Chrome) limit the amount of code (to varying degrees) they wish to share with developers. This means that the BrowserNation add-on does not currently work as well or look as good with other browsers as it does with Firefox. In short, therefore, Firefox allows us to offer you a far better end product. As and when the other browser developers make enough of their code available for us to offer you a first rate app, we will be all over it like white on rice.
7.4.I don’t currently use Firefox but I am interested in using a BrowserNation add-on, why should I switch to Firefox?
Firstly, our add-on is currently only available with Firefox. But there are a number of other great reasons to switch. Firefox is the most popular browser on the market. More and more people switch to it every day – and very few of them switch back. Firefox is an easier, faster, safer way to browse the web. Click here for more reasons why you should switch to Firefox.
7.5.Is the BrowserNation add-on available on Mac and PC?
Yes
